Dividing the Scriptures into chapters and verses has changed it into a compendium of texts. Biblia’, however, is a plural word meaning a collection of books, a library. Each volume has its own distinctive style and content, its own unique message.
The Bible contains great variety, having over forty human authors, writing over a period of fourteen hundred years. It also exhibits remarkable unity, having one editor, blending all its parts into one whole.
Liberals seem reluctant to admit its unity, evangelicals its variety. Yet both are characteristic of the Word of God and need to be held together if its riches are to be enjoyed.

In this series, the Old Testament is explored with a view to answering one simple question: why was this book written? In each case there is a human answer (the immediate situation) and a divine answer (the ultimate purpose). Both prove to be the keys to unlock each book for the interested reader.
